Safety Classes

NUCA Competent Person Training Program

ICON provides the following classes either on-site or at ICON.

Please inquire about our schedule of classes for availability.

Course Outline:

NUCA's Competent Person Training Program provides construction managers and employees with information and training regarding compliance with OSHA's EXCAVATION STANDARD for trench shoring and trench box installation. Program includes the scope and application of protective systems, soil classification and handling an OSHA inspection. The 8-hour seminar includes a lecture on trench shor ing and trench safety supplemented by visual aids and hands on demonstrations. Participants will take an open book test and be expected to achieve a minimum grade of 80%. Each participant will receive a NUCA Competent Person Student Manual and upon satisfactory completion of the program, participant will receive a certificate of completion card.

Qualification:

Certifying a Competent Person in the area of trench shoring and trench safety is the sole responsibility of the employer. Completion of this program does not automatically make an individual a "Competent Person". In order to be considered a "Competent Person", the individual must be designated competent by his or her employer. When applied to trench shoring and excavation operations, the "Competent Person" must have specific training in and be knowledgeable about soil analysis, the use of protective systems, and requirements of the OSHA Excavation Standard. In addition, the "Competent Person" must implement requirements of the Standard and have authority to take immediate action if trench safety hazards exist.

NUCA Confined Space Training Entry Program

Course Outline:

This program, "Confined Space Entry," is intended to provide managers and competent persons with basis information regarding entry into confined spaces, as are often found in tunneling and trenchless construction operations. Its purpose is intended to create an awareness of the trench safety hazards associated with confined spaces and to provide managers with basic information necessary to establish a confined space entry program. No attempt has been made to treat the topic exhaustively.

Every confined space is unique, therefore space must be carefully evaluated and hazards must be eliminated or controlled before the individual in charge issues an entry permit.

Millions of employees involved in trench shoring services enter into confined spaces each year and face significant risk of injury or death. Remarkably, many of these same employees do not recognize that they are working in a confined space and that they may be facing serious unforeseen hazards.

Employers have a responsibility to provide precautions for trench safety for their employees. That responsibility includes ensuring that the confined or enclosed spaces normally found in trench shoring services do not have limited openings, poor natural ventilation, a hazardous atmosphere, and are designed for human occupancy.

Course Objectives:

1 Identify Confined Spaces

2 Demonstrate knowledge of confined space entry requirements

3 Identify Confined Space hazards

4 Set up a basic confined space entry program

Remember…stop and think before entering a Confined Space. Ask if entry into the enclosed space is really necessary or if there is a different and safer way to do the job.
